Pongo-Songo Chimpanzee Island
A small island situated on the Sanaga river, Sanaga Maritime division of Littoral Region (Douala). This island is reserve for animals threatened by deforestation and poaching from the Douala-Edea forest reserve. This project is run by the Papaye association of France, they collect the injured and orphans and then teaches them to be autonomous and to live in a society. This refuge was created by Patricia Leschaeve, it’s a refuge and not a zoo because the animals are free to room freely on this island.
Visits to this site is done by driving from the city of Douala to Marienberg, a small town which is found in the outskirts of Edea town. We shall then board a boat ride through the Sanaga river to arrive the Pongo-Songo Island. While at the Island we shall spend some time with the chimpanzees before returning by boat to Marienberg before driving to Douala.
